Owens Venus’ is a staged photograph shot on location at Owens Lake’s dry lakebed in central California. The lake has been mostly dry since the 1920s, shortly after the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Trona mining and Borax production began on the lakebed in 1962. The water shown here is part of the dust mitigation program to control PM2.5 dust and toxic pollution created by dry minerals and ongoing mining of the lake bed. The red-coloured water is created by halobacteria that thrive in the shallow salinous ponds during the hottest part of the year. The Venus here is my body-a live female figure, positioned in the surreal landscape like a monolithic fertility totem.

Original image-From the ongoing series, ‘Supernatural’: ‘Owens Venus,’ 2020, 60” x 40,” Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle FineArt Paper. Edition of 3 +2AP
